ID: Clinical Microbiology and Antibacterial Fundamentals

Infections are common diagnosis and resulted in 262 million outpatient antibiotic prescriptions in the United States annually. This high prevalence means pharmacists need a strong working knowledge of microbiology and antimicrobial fundamentals. The purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive review of these aspects of infectious diseases.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Given a pathogen, determine the appropriate staining technique
- Identify a pathogen based on staining results and clinical findings
- Compare and contrast antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods
- Recall the classification, mechanism of action, spectrum of activity, available routes, route of elimination, sites of distribution, monitoring parameters, adverse effects, interactions, and pharmacodynamic parameter for select antimicrobials.
