Endocannabinoids and the Pharmacology of Cannabis and Hemp - 2.0 Contact Hours
With the expansion of access to Cannabis products in many states without the oversight of a health care provider, patients are more often counseled by retail staff. The relevance of this instructional module is that it will provide the participant with the background on the medical history of Cannabis and the pharmacology of its chemical constituents to authoritatively discuss the product with patients.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the history of cannabis as medicine (from ancient times to the early 1900s to the CSA and current state medical and recreational use).
- Determine the differences between the three major species of Cannabis and how they don’t necessarily translate to strains sold in dispensaries.
- Describe how the plant synthesizes various cannabinoids and how these compounds relate to endocannabinoids and synthetic cannabinoids.
- Compare and contrast the pharmacological actions of THC and CBD on receptors in the endocannabinoid system.
- Explain the diversity of the endocannabinoid system in normal human physiology.
The University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education (CPE). This event has been accredited for up to 2.0 contact hours of knowledge-based CPE home study.
