Cannabis Module: Pain Management and Supportive Care in Oncology
This module will cover the most common indication patients seek treatment with medical cannabis.... pain. Not only is this the most common reason for medical cannabis use among the general population, it is also the most common reason cancer patients use this product. Cancer patients also use medical cannabis for relief from a variety of symptoms related to their disease and treatment such as nausea/vomiting, weight loss, and insomnia. It is important that health care practitioners are aware of the evidence surrounding these common indications as well as safe use of medical cannabis.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe evidence for medical cannabis use in the management of non-cancer and cancer-related pain including neuropathic pain
- Identify the common reasons for which cancer patients use cannabis
- Evaluate the literature on medical cannabis in common supportive care issues encountered in oncology
- Apply evidence, pros/cons of using medical cannabis given a patient scenario
- Discuss unique considerations and possible interactions between cannabis and conventional cancer care
